Le Sahara est une écorégion désertique située dans la partie nord du continent africain qui se prolonge au-delà de la mer Rouge (il est appelé alors désert saharo-arabique) Il s'étire sur 7 500 kilomètres, couvre 12 millions de kilomètres carrés1 et constitue la partie occidentale d'une vaste diagonale sèche s'étendant jusqu'en Mongolie.
Considéré comme le plus vaste désert chaud du monde (voir la liste des principaux déserts par superficie), il divise le continent du nord au sud. Il couvre d'immenses étendues de territoires et s'étend sur dix pays : le Maroc, l'Algérie, la Tunisie, la Libye, l'Égypte, le Soudan, le Tchad, le Niger, le Mali, la Mauritanie et le territoire contesté du Sahara occidental
The Sahara the Greatest Desert is the world's hottest desert, the third largest desert after Antarctica and the Arctic. At over 9,400,000 square kilometres (3,600,000 sq mi), it covers most of North Africa, making it almost as large as China or the United States. The Sahara stretches from the Red Sea, including parts of the Mediterranean coasts, to the outskirts of the Atlantic Ocean. To the south, it is delimited by the Sahel, a belt of semi-arid tropical savanna that composes the northern region of central and western Sub-Saharan Africa.
Some of the sand dunes can reach 180 metres (590 ft) in height. The name comes from the plural Arabic language word for desert.

อาณาเขตของทะเลทรายสะฮารา ด้านทิศตะวันตกจรดมหาสมุทรแอตแลนติก ทิศเหนือคือเทือกเขาแอตลาสและทะเลเมดิเตอร์เรเนียน ทิศตะวันออกจรดทะเลแดงและประเทศอียิปต์ ทิศใต้จรดประเทศซูดานและหุบเขาของแม่น้ำไนเจอร์
ทะเลทรายสะฮาราครอบคลุมส่วนใหญ่ของสาธารณรัฐประชาธิปไตยประชาชนแอลจีเรีย, ชาด, อียิปต์, ลิเบีย, มาลี, มอริเตเนีย, โมร็อกโก, ไนเจอร์, เวสเทิร์นสะฮารา, ซูดานและตูนิเซีย
